When autumn arrives, few plants capture the season’s warmth and color quite like Chrysanthemum—commonly known as mums. These fall favorites brighten garden beds, front porches, patios, and indoor spaces with rich shades of gold, burgundy, orange, and purple.

To keep mums looking full and vibrant throughout the season, proper selection, placement, and care are essential. Whether you’re a homeowner refreshing your landscape or a small business enhancing curb appeal, these updated care tips will help your mums thrive longer.
  1. Start with Healthy, High-Quality Plants

Long-lasting blooms begin at purchase. Choose mums with:
    • Tight, mostly unopened buds
    • Deep green foliage
    • Compact, well-shaped growth
    • No yellowing leaves or drooping stems
Plants heavy with fully open blooms may look impressive initially,y but often fade more quickly. Selecting buds that are just beginning to open extends display time.
  2. Choose the Right Location for Maximum Blooms

Mums perform best in full sun—at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Adequate light promotes stronger stems, more abundant blooms, and longer-lasting flowers.

For indoor mums, place pots near a bright south- or west-facing window. Keep them away from heat vents, fireplaces, and drafty doorways, as temperature fluctuations can shorten bloom life.
  3. Water Consistently (But Don’t Overdo It)

Consistent moisture is key to extending mum longevity. Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
    • Check the soil daily during warm weather.
    • Water at the base of the plant to reduce fungal risk.
    • Avoid letting containers completely dry out, as mums wilt quickly.
Container-grown mums often require more frequent watering than those planted in the ground.
  4. Ensure Proper Drainage

Good drainage prevents root rot, one of the most common causes of early decline. Use containers with drainage holes and high-quality potting mix.

If planting mums in garden beds, loosen compacted soil and incorporate compost to improve airflow and water movement.
  5. Deadhead to Encourage Continued Blooms

Removing faded flowers (deadheading) helps redirect energy into producing new blooms. Snip spent flowers just above a healthy set of leaves.

Regular deadheading keeps plants looking tidy and encourages extended flowering throughout the fall season.
  6. Fertilize Strategically

For mums planted in spring or early summer, a balanced slow-release fertilizer supports strong growth. However, once fall blooming begins, heavy fertilization is usually unnecessary and may reduce flower longevity.

Focus on consistent watering and sunlight during peak bloom season.
  7. Protect Mums from Early Frost

While mums tolerate cool weather, hard frost can damage blooms. If frost is forecasted:
    • Cover garden mums with lightweight fabric or mulch overnight.
    • Move container mums into a garage or sheltered area temporarily.
Adding 2–3 inches of mulch around garden-planted mums also helps insulate roots.
  8. Prune for Next Year’s Growth

If you plan to overwinter hardy mums in the landscape, prune stems back to about 4–6 inches in late fall or early spring. Apply mulch after the first hard freeze to protect the crown during winter.

With proper care, wide,y hardy varieties will return year after year.
Bonus Tip: Repot Store-Bought Mums

Many fall mums are root-bound when purchased. Gently loosening roots and transferring the plant to a slightly larger container with fresh soil can significantly extend bloom time.

With the right care routine—proper sunlight, consistent watering, deadheading, and frost protection—mums can provide weeks of vibrant fall color. Whether enhancing a storefront display, refreshing a porch, or brightening a garden bed, these simple steps help maximize their seasonal impact.

A little preparation goes a long way in keeping your autumn display healthy, colorful, and welcoming all season long.
