Identifying the Damage: Rats vs. Mice

1. Size:
   Rats are larger than mice. An adult rat can measure anywhere from 7 to 10 inches in length, not including the tail, which can add 7 to 10 inches. On the other hand, mice are much smaller, typically ranging from 2.5 to 4 inches in body length, with a tail of a similar length.
2. Tail:
   Rats have a thicker, scaly tail shorter than their body length. Mice have a longer, thin, and more uniformly shaped tail.
3. Ears and Eyes:
   Mice have larger ears and eyes relative to their body size than rats. Rat ears and eyes appear smaller in comparison.
4. Fur:
   Rats tend to have shaggy, coarse fur, while mice have smoother, sleeker coats.

   Rats are more likely to be nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. On the other hand, mice may be active both day and night, with frequent bursts of activity.
2. Nesting Habits:
   Rats typically nest in burrows, which can be found outdoors or in crawlspaces, while mice often build their nests indoors, in areas like attics, wall voids, and basements.

3. Grease Marks:
   Rats often leave grease marks along their regular pathways and entry points due to the oil and dirt on their fur.
4. Burrows:
   Rats create burrows in gardens or near structures, which can be identified by their entrances and exit holes.
5. Chewed Items:
   Rats chew on insulation, pipes, and electrical wires, leading to damage and fire hazards.

   Mice also gnaw on objects, but their gnaw marks are smaller and less conspicuous than those of rats.
