Summary
Flakes on the scalp often confuse people, but dandruff and scalp psoriasis come from very different causes. Dandruff usually results from yeast overgrowth or irritation, producing small, white or yellow, greasy flakes that spread lightly and often respond well to medicated shampoos. Scalp psoriasis, however, is an autoimmune condition that accelerates skin cell turnover, creating thick, well-defined, silvery or red, scaly plaques. It can extend beyond the hairline and sometimes affects nails or other body areas. While both cause itching and discomfort, psoriasis is more persistent and may require prescription treatments, whereas dandruff is generally milder and easier to control.
