Summary
Researchers studying driver behavior in China have found that in-car scents can influence road rage and emotional states during driving. A simulated driving experiment showed that certain essential oils can meaningfully alter driver emotions. Lemongrass and jasmine were found to calm aggressive feelings and reduce driving anger, while peppermint and patchouli produced mixed or even negative emotional effects depending on context. The study used a driving simulator to expose young licensed drivers to different fragrance conditions and measured their speed and emotional responses. Results suggest scent-based interventions could support safer driving environments and may be integrated into future vehicle systems to manage stress and aggression.
