A major new study reveals that four modifiable risk factors—high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and smoking—precede almost all cases of heart disease, including heart failure, stroke, and heart attacks. Among more than nine million adults in South Korea and nearly 7,000 in the U.S., 99 % of those who went on to develop cardiovascular illness had at least one of these risk factors, and over 93 % had two or more. The findings underscore that heart disease seldom strikes truly “out of the blue” and that managing these four core risks through lifestyle and medical care can radically reduce future danger.
