Essential oils like lemongrass, lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus mixed with water can create a repellent spray. Apply around kitchen areas and fruit storage spots to discourage fruit flies. Additionally, they can breed in moist houseplant soil. To avoid this, allow soil to dry between watering, ensure proper drainage, remove dead leaves, and consider covering soil surfaces with sand or gravel.

Kitchen drains often harbor organic matter where fruit flies can breed. Regularly flush drains with hot water and clean openings to remove buildup. Persistent problems might require using a drain brush or a specialized cleaning product.
