Lower Back Pain Relief Stretches for Flexibility and Comfort

Simple Stretches to Ease Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain affects many people and can result from sitting too long, poor posture, or physical strain. While seeing a healthcare provider is important to address serious or lasting pain, adding gentle stretches to your daily routine can help ease discomfort, boost flexibility, and support spinal health.

Try These Gentle Stretches at Home

Cat-Cow Stretch
Position yourself on hands and knees with wrists under shoulders and knees under hips. Inhale as you dip your back, lifting your head and tailbone, then exhale as you round your spine and tuck your chin. Move slowly between these poses for 1–2 minutes, focusing on smooth breathing.

Child’s Pose
Begin kneeling, then sit back onto your heels. Reach your arms forward and lower your chest toward the floor, resting your forehead down. Hold for 30–60 seconds, breathing deeply to relax your lower back and hips.

Sphinx Pose
Lie face down with legs straight. Prop yourself up on your forearms with elbows beneath your shoulders, lifting your chest. Keep hips on the floor and avoid arching too far to stretch your spine gently. Hold for up to a minute while breathing steadily.

Knee-to-Chest Stretch
Lie on your back and pull one knee toward your chest with your hands, keeping the other leg extended on the floor. Hold for 20–30 seconds, then switch legs. Repeat a few times per side to relieve tension in the lower back and hips.

Supine Twist
Lie on your back with arms extended outwards. Bend one knee and slowly guide it across your body, keeping shoulders on the floor. Hold for 30–60 seconds, then switch sides. Move gently without forcing the twist to improve spinal mobility.

Pelvic Tilt
Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat. Tighten your abdominal muscles to press your lower back into the floor, then release. Repeat 10–15 times to strengthen your core and support lumbar stability.

Additional Tips for a Healthier Back

Beyond stretching, focus on good posture when sitting and standing, take regular breaks from long periods of sitting, and use ergonomic furniture. Staying active with walking or swimming and managing stress can also help reduce back pain.

Remember, consistent stretching and mindful movement can make a big difference in easing lower back discomfort and improving flexibility. If your pain doesn’t improve or gets worse, seek professional medical advice to address the cause properly.
