When to Replace Your Car's Brakes

1. Squeaking or Squealing Noise
   When you apply the brakes, a squeaking or squealing noise is one of the most noticeable signs that your car's brakes may be wearing out. This high-pitched noise is often caused by a wear indicator built into the brake pads. When the brake pads become too thin, the hand scrapes against the rotor, creating noise. Ignoring this sound can lead to further damage and reduced braking efficiency.
2. Grinding Sound
   When you apply the brakes, there is a grinding sound that your brake pads have worn down completely. When the brake pads are gone, the metal of the calipers and rotors will rub against each other, causing this unmistakable noise. Driving with brakes in this condition compromises safety and leads to more extensive and expensive repairs.
3. Reduced Braking Performance
   If you notice that your car's braking performance has deteriorated, it's a significant red flag. Reduced stopping power can be due to worn brake pads, glazed brake rotors, or a brake fluid issue. When you experience longer stopping distances or the need to apply more pressure on the brake pedal, it's time to have your brakes inspected and possibly replaced.
4. Vibrations or Pulsations
   When you apply the brakes, do you feel vibrations or pulsations through the brake pedal? This is a common sign of warped brake rotors. Warped rotors can result from overheating during heavy braking or prolonged use with worn-out brake pads. These uneven surfaces can lead to an uncomfortable and less effective braking experience.
5. Dashboard Warning Lights
   Modern cars have warning lights and sensors to monitor various systems, including the brakes. If you see the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) or brake warning light illuminated on your dashboard, it indicates something is wrong with your braking system. It could be a sensor issue, low brake fluid, or worn-out brake pads.
6. Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal
   A soft or spongy brake pedal is a sign of air or moisture in the brake lines, which can compromise the effectiveness of your brakes. If your brake pedal feels mushy or goes to the floor when you apply it, you must have your brake system inspected immediately.
